South Tyrol is not only the region that can boast the highest number of castles in Europe, with hundreds of castles and fortresses, as well as a number of monasteries and churches, but it also offers a rich cultural program, especially in Brunico, the main town in the Val Pusteria Valley.
Other major towns such as Bolzano, Innsbruck, the historic bishopric of Brixen/Bressanone, the spa town of Merano and the medieval merchant villages of Vipiteno and Chiusa are all nearby, and Lago di Garda, Venice and Verona are all only a few hours away.
